Guitar Tuning Harmonic Method

Attention: open in a new window.  E-mail

If you tuned your guitar to the standard tuning method example, you should already be in tune. This way, you will be able to learn the technique before using it for actual tuning purposes.

To use this method of tuning you must first learn how to make a harmonic. To do this lightly touch the low E string directly above the fifth fret without depressing the string. Then pick the string as normal and quickly move your finger, this will produce a bell-like tone. Now practice this same technique at the fifth, seventh, and twelfth frets of all strings.

Before tuning be sure that your low E string is in tune with the guitar tuner at the top of the left hand menu. Then start by tuning the seventh fret harmonic on the A string to the fifth string harmonic on the E string. Next tune the seventh fret harmonic of the D string to the fifth fret harmonic of the A string. Then tune the seventh fret harmonic of the G string to the fifth fret harmonic of the D string. Then tune the twelfth fret harmonic of the B string to the seventh fret harmonic of the low E string. Finally, tune the seventh fret harmonic of the high E string to the fifth fret harmonic of the B string. Study the color-coded diagram and listen to the examples provided to further clarify this method of tuning.
