How do you spell a C diminished 7th chord?
Ask anybody on the internet – or anybody who took a course in harmony – and they will tell you that The Correct Spelling (TM) is C Eb Gb Bbb.
And yet several musicians do not spell the C dim7 in this way.
Among these musicians are people like Bach or Beethoven…
…but don’t say this around too much, or the Internet Music Theory Police may come and arrest you for Unlawful Spelling.
A few weeks ago I published two videos on diminished chords, and the YouTube comments were all aflame-warring on the correct spelling.
The reality is that there are some good reasons to misspell the C dim7 chord. And in fact, I think you should misspell these chords too. Here’s why:
