The Motley Crue classic power ballad Home Sweet Home from the album Theatre of Pain is one of the most memorable of the 1980’s. In my opinion Mick Mars is one of the best rock guitarist of the era. Although Mick wasn’t as fast or polished as some of his competitors, his playing is solid and melodic, enhancing the songs instead of being distracting.

Home Sweet Home – Guitar Solo
Rhythm with no solo
Notes: Mick Mars really displays his musical maturity and strong sense of melody with this classic metal solo. This guitar solo from the Motley Crue classic power ballad Home Sweet Home from the album Theatre of Pain uses the C minor pentatonic blues scale (C D D# F F# G A# C). The rhythm guitar chords played are as follows: C Minor, A# G#.
The first part starts with a one step bend then descends chromatically down the C Minor Pentatonic blues scale resolving on the melodic theme that appears throughout the solo.
Solo part #1 slow
This section begins with a technique called pinch harmonics. This involves using the flesh of your thumb to lightly strike the string directly after the pick. This brings out extra harmonics in the note and is very effective when coupled with distortion. This section also resolves on the melodic theme.
Solo part #2 slow
This section begins with a slide up to the 15th fret to begin a three note repeating riff. This section also involves using pinch harmonics.
Solo part #3 slow
This section uses a slight variation of the melodic theme using a two note chord (D) to accent the theme.
