You probably know at least one music snob. Yes, that’s the kind of people who listen only to one kind of music, and are adamant – adamant I tell you – that everything else is ‘not music’ or ‘just noise’. If you are like me, you find the music snobs annoying. I mean they can listen to whatever they want – it’s a free world – but can they at least stop telling me how I’m ‘ruining my ears’ by listening to the music I like? And yet, I have to admit, the snobs do have point. Because you, my friend, are a snob too. And so am I. Don’t believe me? Well, is there some kind of music you don’t like? That makes you want turn off the ration immediately? Any I’d-rather-get-out-of-the-house-and-wait-under-the-wind-and-rain-than-stay-in-and-listen-to-this-abomination music? Yes, of course you know some music like that. But YOU are justified, because that REALLY is not music, just noise! See?
This is like when you are driving on the highway. And you are cruising at just the right speed. Anyone going faster than you is a dangerous crazed maniac. Geez, that’s dangerous! …and anyone who is going slower than you needs to drink a coffee, stat. We haven’t got all day to stay here, son. Move! Isn’t this funny how that works?
Of course, there are speed limits – and these help understanding how you can negotiate the road with other people.
But what about music? Are the Jazz snob right? And the ones who NEVER listen to Jazz? And the ones who listen only to top 40? And the nothing-good-was-composed-after-the-Beatles die-hard fans? And the ones who can’t listen to either Country nor Western? What about to people who listen only to Post-Pop Progressive Metal? (but only if it’s played ironically?)
Well, in this case, you have this handy theory of musical taste (because “there is no accounting for musical taste” is a lazy live-and-let-live answer that your parents gave you so you would not fight with your brother….)
With this theory you can understand:
- Why you like what you like
- Why other people like what they like
- How you can change your musical tastes (or theirs, but ask for consent) so that you can experience the best of different musical styles.
Why You Hate Jazz (Or Hip-Hop, Or Country, Or Classical..):
P.S. Ok, ok, you got me, a good part of my motivation for doing this video was to stick it to music snobs. Then again, with what I say in the video you can make any music snob shut up. And they have no defense from this. Have fun!
